Shop Local in Ryde: A Guide to the Best Independent Shops and Places to Eat
One of the joys of a holiday at our Isle of Wight cottages is having Ryde right on your doorstep. The Island's largest town is an easy ten-minute walk along the main road from the cottages — or, if you'd rather take the scenic route, a lovely twenty-five-minute stroll along the beach. Either way, you arrive into a town full of independent shops, family-run cafés and proper character.
Ryde rewards a slow wander. Its streets are lined with one-off boutiques, gift shops, galleries and places to eat that you simply won't find on any high street back home. We're great believers in shopping local, so we've pulled together this guide to help you make the most of it.
Why Shop Local in Ryde?
Ryde has held on to something many seaside towns have lost: a genuine independent shopping scene. Wander up Union Street — the main thoroughfare, climbing gently from the seafront — and you'll pass quirky little shops, galleries and cafés all the way. Tucked just off it, the Royal Victoria Arcade, a Grade II-listed Victorian building, is home to a cluster of antique and gift retailers well worth an hour of browsing.
Spending your holiday money in these independent shops keeps it in the local community and supports the families and makers behind the counter. It's also simply more fun — every shop has its own personality.
Independent Shops in Ryde
Number 66 Cards and Gifts
A lovely spot for cards, gifts, and those little finds you didn't know you were looking for. Number 66 is exactly the kind of independent shop Ryde does so well — perfect for picking up a present or a holiday souvenir. We loved it so much we came home with a driftwood blackboard, which now has pride of place in one of the cottages.
Antiques and Vintage Finds
Ryde is a happy hunting ground for antique lovers. The Royal Victoria Arcade and the shops around it are full of forgotten trinkets, vintage pieces and curiosities. Set aside time to dig around — half the pleasure is in the unexpected discovery.
Hurst & Son
Ryde's DIY shop is also a firm favourite with our four-legged guests — they keep dog treats behind the counter, so your dog gets a warm welcome too. The kind of friendly, traditional shop that makes shopping local such a pleasure. Charlie, our gorgeous dog, pulls us in every time we walk past!
Jewellery, Crafts and Homeware
Ryde has a good scattering of independent jewellery shops with handmade and one-off pieces, alongside shops dedicated to crafts and homeware. Wherever you wander, there's something a little different to catch your eye.
Liz Earle
The well-known skincare brand Liz Earle has its roots on the Isle of Wight, and its Ryde store is a lovely place to browse beauty and wellbeing products with that Island connection.
Where to Eat and Drink in Ryde
All that shopping is hungry work — happily, Ryde's food scene is every bit as good as its shops.
French Franks
A much-loved local diner and a great spot for breakfast, lunch or a coffee. French Franks is friendly, easy-going and reliably good — exactly the kind of place you want when you're out for the day. Handy for a relaxed bite before or after a wander down Union Street.
Fumo 33
Perched at the top of Union Street, Fumo 33 is a stylish Italian restaurant set in a striking industrial-meets-loft space. Expect pizza, pasta, risotto and wood-fired dishes, with options for vegetarians and vegans too. A great choice for a relaxed dinner after a day's exploring.
Crepe Lovers
A charming family-run creperie serving both sweet and savoury crepes, with a big menu and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Perfect for a treat with the children, or a lazy brunch.
Chocolate Apothecary
For anyone with a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Apothecary is a treat — a lovely spot to pick up something indulgent or a little gift to take home.
Make a Day of It: Shopping and the Seafront
One of the best things about Ryde is how easily a shopping trip turns into a full day out. The town sits behind six miles of golden sand, and Ryde Pier — built in 1813, the oldest seaside pleasure pier in England — stretches nearly half a mile out into the Solent.
You might browse Union Street in the morning, stop for lunch at a café, spend the afternoon on the beach, and wander back to the cottages along the sand as the light softens. With the cottages just ten minutes away on foot, there's no rush and no need to drive. Please note you can do the 10-minute walk along the road from the cottages to Ryde at any time of day or night, but the beach walk is only available at low tide.
Shopping in Ryde Through the Year
Ryde is a pleasure to visit in any season:
-
Spring and summer — the town is at its liveliest, with the beach, the pier and the seafront all in full swing alongside the shops.
-
June brings a real buzz, with events and the Island in full bloom.
-
Christmas is genuinely special — independent shops come into their own for festive gift shopping, and the town has a warm, community feel.
-
Out of season, Ryde is quieter and calmer — perfect for an unhurried browse and a coffee in a cosy spot.
A Few Tips for Shopping Local in Ryde
-
Walk in, walk back. It's a ten-minute walk along the main road from the cottages, or twenty-five minutes along the beach — leave the car behind.
-
Allow time for the Arcade. The Royal Victoria Arcade keeps its own opening days, so check ahead if it's a must-see for you.
-
Bring a bag. You'll likely come home with more than you planned — that's the Ryde effect.
-
Chat to the shopkeepers. Independent shops come with local knowledge; some of our best recommendations have come from a friendly chat over the counter.
